Mission McCall Mondays 9061 to 9070

This week's Mission McCall covers pattern numbers 9061-9070.  A super big thank you for everyone who's sent images so far--it's really fun trying to fill all the gaps and finding the missing images. For those of you new to the series, my goal is to update the Vintage Pattern Wiki so that it's complete for all McCall patterns from mid 1936-1940.  If you have any source images for any of these patterns, email them to me and I'll add them to the Vintage Pattern Wiki! I'll be uploading them in big batches...so stay tuned!

The first pattern this week, 9061 is already in the Wiki:

Love the neat pleating detail on the yoke and pockets!

I'm missing McCall 9062 but I have images for 9063 and 9064:

9063 is actually available as a repro pattern from EvaDress.  I love the unique details of this blouse. It would look fantastic with the skirt as well!

Love them all! Especially 9067! There is something about peplums that I love.  Here's a side view of that pattern drawing:

9068 is already in the Wiki (it reminds me a lot of 9004):

I like that you can change up the yoke or leave it off completely!

9069 and 9070 are both children's patterns:

Such a cute girl's dress. It looks like it has two collars?

And the last one is 9070 which is very Scottish:

 I love it!!!  I love that it includes a pattern for the hat as well!!

McCall 9054 found!

A big thank you to Sarah from Color Kitten who found McCall 9054 on the Commercial Pattern Archive COPA website.  While I can put this photo on my blog, we are still checking if we can upload it into the Vintage Pattern Wiki.

Isn't it beautiful????  It's a Molyneux design.

I really love this tunic dress in the lovely lightweight fabrics shown above.  The back is absolutely stunning!

We also know for sure that this pattern is from 1937.  So somewhere between pattern numbers 9043 and 9054 is when the patterns from 1937 start!!

Mission McCall Mondays 9051-9060

This week's Mission McCall covers pattern numbers 9051-9060 and I've got images for all of them except one!!!  For those of you new to the series, my goal is to update the Vintage Pattern Wiki so that it's complete for all McCall patterns from mid 1936-1940.  If you have any source images for any of these patterns, email them to me and I'll add them to the Vintage Pattern Wiki! Up first is McCall 9051, an adorable little girl's dress.  I found the pattern image on an amazing flickr set full of patterns.

I am swooning over this housecoat! How delicious would this be in the winter?

 I love these blouses as well...very classic cuts!

I'm missing the image for 9054 but have 9055:

 I love this neckline...this would be fun to add as a refashion element to an already existing dress that maybe had a not so nice neckline....

Next up are 9056 and 9057....

 I must say, I am loving the skirt on 9057!!

Now onto 9058, 9059 and 9060:

These are all really similiar!  But is that a bust dart in 9058 just below the pocket???  I haven't seen many of those so far! 

Ok, I'm dying to know which is your favourite...Are you more a glamourous housecoat kind of gal, the safari separates, the puffed sleeve gown kind of gal, loads of buttons or the classic shirt?

My thoughts on sewing productivity...

Hi everyone! Thank you for the wonderful anniversary wishes yesterday!  Celebrating eight years and surviving the end of the world, not bad for a Saturday :)

I'm super excited to have been asked by Tilly from Tilly and the Buttons to do a guest post today on my thoughts on sewing productivity!  Check it out here...I would love to hear your thoughts!!

In other news, I'm hoping to make some progress on a new blouse for both the Sew Weekly and the Sewing Through the Decades Challenges:

It's from 1945 and I am LOVING the sequins! This will be a first--but I'm super excited to sew up this blouse!!!  I'll keep you posted on the progress!

Eight years ago today...

We met one night in New York City, exactly eight years ago today, while we were both out with friends.  The moment we saw each other across the crowded room, something very singular occurred, we were drawn together, gazing across the room at each other for a long time until we finally spoke.

Us on our very first trip to Scotland six years ago...

We ended up in an all-night cafe (it was French Roast for those of you in NYC), drinking tea; talking and listening in turn, captivated and enchanted.  We walked a block together in the pre-dawn misty rain, reluctantly parting ways.

In the years since, we've grown together; learning about each other; discovering our dreams and making them real.  We've comforted one another through disappointments and difficulties, supported each other in our endeavors, and rejoiced in each other's triumphs.  

Five years ago we got married--well, actually we've had several weddings (and we have a couple of anniversaries).  Our first was a surprise wedding for our friends in Fort Tryon Park, NYC (five years exactly to the date that we met).  We hosted it as a 'going away' and David's '40th birthday' party (so we knew folks would definitely show up!).  They had no idea!!!

The only person that knew was our dear friend Jenny who officiated...Here's the part where she has just said ...Dearly Beloved....

 

It was such an amazing day and totally us...

Here we are jumping over a broomstick (an old Scottish tradition) and entering into our new phase of life together: 

Our journey has now taken us to Scotland, a place we visited together several years ago.  Our time with each other in a new place far from home has fortified our love for one another and our belief in each other's dreams.

How I learned how to sew...

Hi everyone..thank you for all your lovely comments on my hooded dress.  It's so much fun to share my excitement over projects and to see your excitement too :)

 My first ever finished object--A 1943 DuBarry blouse

My 1940 hooded dress...

 I've been sewing up a storm lately and I am super excited to show you one of my favourite sewing projects to date!  I made this dress from the amazing McCall 3678 from the year 1940:

Oh how I love this pattern--hood, buttons, pleated sleeves, contrast fabric....

I made this dress for the UK meet-up.  I started it on Friday evening and didn't finish it until Saturday morning at around 9:30am (since I caught the 6am train I finished the last bits on the train!!!).  I didn't even go to sleep!!  I was so excited about this dress and about the meet-up!

In honour of the meet-up and this week's theme over at the Sew Weekly, I used a super cute union jack lining material for the hood:

And the pocket flaps:

I used red gabardine (which is a bit tricky to photograph but it's a true red).  After working with the loose weave fabric, gabardine was a dream to sew!!

The pattern is basically a princess seamed dress with buttons going down the entire front:

And there's the hood--I really love the hood:

But I think my favourite part of the dress has to be the lines in the back! The princess seams make the fabric form gentle pleats in the back:

YAY! I am very happy with my new dress!!!

My 1950's wiggle dress...

YAY! This last weekend I finished my 1950's wiggle dress...

You may remember that I used a very loose weave tweed fabric from Croft Mill.  I ended up following the advice of both Pin Queen to underline the dress and Steph from 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World to take a scrap of fabric and try out different stitches, interfacings, etc.

I'm quite happy with how it came out!

This was my first time doing a pleat in the back and I really love the feature!  I can't wait to make the jacket for this pattern.  Here's the pattern cover again so you can see what the jacket looks like:

 The dress has a side zipper and one button at the top followed by several concealed snaps.  With the fit of the dress, there is no way you could get it on without the opening in the front!

You may remember I posted the inspiration picture for this outfit of my mom in her pink suit in 1964 with her matching hat, bag and shoes:

Well, I did find a lovely black hat to wear with the dress:

  I love it! I'm really glad I stuck with this fabric as it is so soft and comfortable to wear!  With the jacket I think this will be a staple outfit.

This week's Mission McCall covers pattern numbers 9041-9050.  For those of you new to the series, my goal is to update the Vintage Pattern Wiki so that it's complete for all McCall patterns from mid 1936-1940.  If you have any source images for any of these patterns, email them to me and I'll add them to the Vintage Pattern Wiki!  A big thank you to Amanda who found McCall 9036 and 9038 last week (9036 ended up coming home with me). I also ended up finding McCall 9018 (a children's pattern) as well. I'll be adding the lot to vintage pattern wiki next week!

The first pattern this week is McCall 9042:

Here's the long sleeve of the same pattern...I really love the ends of the sleeves on this:

But the best part of the pattern may be the button-up back:

Though you would probably need extra assistance getting this dress on!!

Next up is a gown that is already in the Vintage Pattern Wiki, McCall 9043:

ooohhhh ....swoon! Love that back!  And the person that uploaded it into the Vintage Pattern Wiki also uploaded the page it was featured on in the December 1936 McCall style news:

That means we are getting close to 1937!!  And it is likely that some of the missing images from this week may be in the December 1936 McCall magazine!

9044 and 9045 are also already in the Vintage Pattern Wiki.  9044 is a delightful tabbed collar top and skirt:

Blogger Meet-up of the Century

I had soooooo much fun yesterday.  Seriously, it was my version of the perfect day.  An entire day of meeting women who inspire me, talking about sewing nonstop  (without feeling like I'm boring someone), visiting the V&A museum, fabric and pattern swapping, and fabric shopping!   No wonder I slept until 1:30pm today...hehehehehe

I took the 6am train from Edinburgh and got into London just before 11am.  At the train station, I met Charlotte and Diane from the Sew Weekly Sewing Circle.  We headed over the V&A where together we were a group of 14 fabulous sewists plus one mum!  Not only that but we had each wore a colour-coordinated theme of red, white and blue to celebrate this next week's theme of Rule, Britannia! at the Sew Weekly.

I am going to do a guest post tomorrow on the Sew Weekly about the meet-up.  So definitely check there for the fun details of the day with loads more photos!  I do, however, have to show you the BEST photo ever taken by Charlotte's Mum (thank you Charlotte's mum for taking all these lovely photos) on Diane's camera:

The pigeon wanted in on the fun.  But as the other Charlotte mentioned, she didn't follow the colour scheme ;)  First a big thank you to Charlotte from the Sew Weekly Sewing Circle for helping to coordinate the Sew Weekly meet-up!!!  I had such a fabulous time!

Well, it gets better because when we were originally planning a meet up, Karen from Did you Make That was also planning a meet-up and did a post suggesting the SAME day!  How fabulous is that???

So the second part of the day involved meeting-up with a load of other sewing bloggers for the Goldhawk Road Fabric Fandango --10-12 fabric stores, 38 + sewists, 1 bar....who could ask for more?

By chance, we actually met up in the Goldhawk Road tube station....there were giggles and hugs galore.  In fact, as Karen and I lunged for each other to hug, some poor passerby almost got caught between us! hahahhaha

Isn't it funny to meet people you've only known through blogs?  When I saw Charlotte from Tuppence Ha'Penny coming down the street, I yelled "Charlotte" and she yelled "Debi"....like long lost friends! I actually think Charlotte and I probably knew each other in the 40's ;)

I literally made the dress on Friday (from cutting out to sewing in the sleeves at 4am on Saturday) and was finishing sewing it up on the train (hemming, tacking facing and sewing buttons).  I actually, ahem, didn't go to sleep at all.  All the sewing madness and I was so excited for the meet-up! :)  I'll do another post on the details of the dress--but it's from a 1940 McCall pattern AND it has a hood lined in union jack material!

It's also funny when you know someone's blog name as their nickname...the whole time I was thinking, I've gotta find Scruffy Badger...I haven't talked to her yet! hahahha

The other fabulous part was running into everyone in the fabric stores! Seriously, I wish all my fabric shopping was with my 40 new best friends!

After some fabulous shopping and pattern swapping, I then got on the 6pm train back to Edinburgh and arrived just after 11pm.  Phew! Talk about whirlwind.  I seriously think we need to plan a weekend extravaganza sometime soon!  Next time I'll definitely spending the night in London!

 My loot from the day:  3.5 metres of the loveliest tawna lawn fabric, several 1950's patterns, one pattern from the 1970's and one from the 80's, plus some lovely trim from Judy that I won in the swap.

Karen put together a list of all the sewists in the fabric fandango meet-up and I've added all the Sew Weekly ladies for this amazing list of folks that were all there!

This was the week of meet-ups as I also had the chance to meet up with Elise who blogs at Chez Napier on Monday in Edinburgh! That was such a fun time as well....fabric shopping, charity shops and tea!  Elise, I can't wait to following the fruits of your labour over the next year!
